That third route is why cheap broken devices are worth buying even when they cannot be economically restored. A unit with several reusable components can pay for itself supplying paid customer orders.
Use a checklist, not memory
Video walkthroughs demonstrate working through a per-device checklist rather than relying on recall. The checklist answers the question that actually blocks you: is this part dirty, is it missing, or does it genuinely need replacing?
Running that as an explicit pass before you start reassembling catches problems while they are still cheap to fix. Discovering a missing component with the device half-assembled costs far more time.
Treat the bench as a pipeline
The other habit that shows up consistently in demonstrations is zoning the workbench — one area for parts coming out, one for cleaned parts, one staged for reassembly.
This scales with device complexity. As part counts climb, the difference between a zoned bench and a pile is measured in lost screws, and lost screws are a rating penalty.
Missing screws and your rating
The reported rating thresholds make hardware explicit:

When a part falls off the desk
Components physically dropping off the workbench is a real and reported problem — enough so that a community mod exists specifically to recover them, restoring a lost part to the desk with a key press.

Harder devices need a known order
For the more complex devices, assembly order matters and is not obvious from the parts alone. Dedicated community write-ups exist covering the assembly orders for the hardest devices, and they are the right reference when a specific unit will not go back together.
This also matters for the timed competition mode, which runs with no on-screen guidance — meaning assembly order has to be memorised in advance rather than worked out live.
Automating the missing-part problem
A community mod exists that fills in missing components in one action rather than ordering them individually. Like all mods it can break with any patch, and it changes the economy of a job, so treat it as a convenience rather than a fix.
The underlying skill it shortcuts — knowing what is missing before you start — is still worth developing, because the competition mode gives you no help at all.
A working sequence
- Diagnose the fault before disassembling.
- Lay parts out in zones as you remove them.
- Classify every part: normal, dirty, or damaged.
- Clean the dirty ones; source replacements only for damaged ones.
- Reassemble against a checklist, accounting for every screw.
- Run the device test before handing the job back.
